Social Prescribing for I/DD

Fill your prescription for an uplifting social experience!

  • Are you a community member living with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD)?
  • Are you a Direct Support Professional or family member caring for a person with I/DD?

Through a partnership with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra offers complimentary tickets to our concerts for I/DD community members, along with their staff and caregivers, through our innovative program of Social Prescribing. Social Prescribing is a healthcare treatment that seeks to improve mental and physical health outcomes by connecting individuals with the arts.

Binghamton and its surrounding areas are home to thousands of individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The I/DD community has high rates of unequal health outcomes, exacerbated by the increased loneliness and isolation that are too often part of the experience of living with a disability.

At the Philharmonic, we know the power of music shared in community. Attending a performance stirs curiosity, lifts spirits, and fosters connection among diverse groups of people. Being in the audience at a live concert is a unique and joyful way to reduce stress, regulate emotions, and create a powerful sense of togetherness.

Thanks to generous support from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, the Philharmonic is now able to offer its pioneering program Social Prescribing with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Social prescribing is an innovative treatment modality that integrates the arts and community into healthcare. Research shows that in addition to improving mental health and social connection, engaging with the arts reduces inflammation, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Expanded access to great music played by the Philharmonic to individuals with I/DDs not only reduces their loneliness, but also leads to better outcomes in physical health.

Social Prescribing with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra provides free concert tickets to members of the I/DD community, along with their families, caregivers, and staff. To take advantage of this groundbreaking program, fill out the form on this page or call the box office at 607-723-3931. We can’t wait to connect you with the power of live music!
