The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra Presents Extraordinary Cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins in
“Creations of Fire”

The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to continue its 70th Anniversary Classical Series with Creations of Fire, a concert ablaze with passion and inspiration. The program features two works by Ludwig van Beethoven – his exuberant Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, and his elegant and witty Symphony No. 8 in F Major – and also showcases the triumphant return to Binghamton of the extraordinary young cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins in the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Since her Philharmonic debut in 2023, Annie Jacobs-Perkins has quickly established herself as a rising star of the classical music world, with appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Sydney Opera House and an album with the prestigious British label Champs Hill. In Shostakovich’s groundbreaking First Cello Concerto, written during a brief thaw in Soviet culture following the death of Stalin, Jacobs-Perkins brings her signature intensity and fire to what is considered the most virtuosic work in the entire cello repertoire.

The public is invited to a Pre-Concert Chat at 6:30pm about the music of Shostakovich, “Irony in the Age of Iron,” by the Philharmonic’s Director of Education and Community Engagement Dr. Julia Grella O’Connell.

Tickets are $29 to $73. Kids 17 and under attend free, thanks to Symphonic Series Sponsor M&T Bank. For more information, contact the Binghamton Philharmonic Box Office at 607-723-3931 or visit www.binghamtonphilharmonic.org.

About Annie Jacobs-Perkins

Praised for anything from “hypnotic lyricism, causing listeners to forget where they were for a moment” (Alex Ross, The New Yorker) to "delightfully pluck[ing] and slapp[ing] her cello like a rockabilly upright bassist," cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins is 1st prize winner of the 2024 Buchet International Cello Competition (“Prix Buchet”) and 2023 Pierre Fournier Award.

She is the Artist-in-Residence of the Austin Chamber Music Center in Texas as well as the cellist of the Berlin-based piano trio, Trio Brontë, winner of the 2025 Schubert und die Musik der Moderne Competition (1st prize and special prize), 2023 Ilmari Hannikainen International Piano Chamber Music Competition (1st), and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Competition (2nd). Annie regularly participates in festivals such as Krzyżowa Music, Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Yellow Barn, and Marlboro Music, where she has collaborated with artists such as Miriam Fried, Nobuko Imai, Anthony Marwood, Donald Weilerstein, and members of the Brentano, Doric, Juilliard, and Kuss Quartets. Her performances have brought her to venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Konzerthaus Berlin, het Konzertgebouw, Musikverein Graz, and Wigmore Hall.

Annie holds an Artist Diploma from the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin and masters degrees from the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and New England Conservatory, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California. Her primary teachers are Frans Helmerson, Troels Svane, Laurence Lesser, Ralph Kirshbaum, and Kathleen Murphy Kemp.
