Requiescat in pace: John S. Wojtowitz

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our longtime violinist John S. Wojtowitz. John played with the Philharmonic for 47 years, spending ten of those years as our music librarian, before his retirement in 2021. He will be deeply missed.

From the Press and Sun-Bulletin:

John S. Wojtowitz, a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, May 19, 2025, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 78 years old.

Born to a family that cherished him deeply, John's life was marked by a profound sense of duty, camaraderie, and love. He spent 56 years in a loving marriage with his devoted wife, Marijane (nee Ostrom) Wojtowitz. He shared a strong bond with his son, James, his daughter-in-law, Cléa, and adored his granddaughter, Victoria. The joy he found in their company was immeasurable. John is survived by all of them.

John's professional journey was equally impressive. He was the Vice-President of the Thomson Insurance Agency, having entered the business in 1978. Contributions extended beyond his office walls as he served as a Past President, Past Treasurer, and prominent member of the Johnson City Rotary Club for ˜50 years. His dedication was recognized with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award. John was also a Master Mason with the Johnson City Lodge #970 F.& A.M., further showcasing his dedication to community and brotherhood. John was also a dedicated member of the Binghamton Philharmonic for ˜47 years where he served as the librarian for a decade.

John's passions were as varied as his accomplishments. He played the violin with a grace that echoed his soulful nature and enjoyed the strategic challenge of golf, playing in the YMCA / TGIF golf league for ˜48 years. His love for personal relationships was evident in the deep connections he maintained with friends and clients over the years.

John's legacy is one of integrity, dedication, and warmth. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be offered by Deacon Thomas Picciano on Saturday 10:30am at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect St. Binghamton where the family will receive friends 9:30-10:30am

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that in his memory donations be made to the “V Foundation” for cancer research or “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” supporting veterans.

Rest in peace, John S. Wojtowitz. Your kindness, dedication, and love will forever be remembered.
